Hehehe. You know, its been six amazing years since I bought my 2004 R32. I loved driving that car, but looking back on the person I was then from the perspective of where I am now, I am not sure I would own another one, if someone wanted to give it to me. My reason is because of the person I wish <em>not</em> to become. When I owned my spiffy car I was such a prick. I just thought I was the bee's knee's. I never want to be that person again.

Having said that, the new .:R20 is mighty tempting, and if I won the lottery, who knows? As it is, I drive around in a beat up old Volvo that is a lovely piece of junk. Just like I me! When I get to heaven, if the Lord has a shiny new Blue R20 waiting for me, I will be delighted. But until then, my Volvo reminds me of the life I have lived and is more suitable for me. It does not get me noticed as much, is not fun to drive at all, leaks oil etc. But the car is loyal, has a good heart, has good intentions, and even though it's not pretty on the outside, on the inside it is dependable, happy and looking forward to the day when it's body is shiny and new again. :D

Since all of the people on here who have responded to this article have either NEVER DRIVEN or JUST PURCHASED the watered-down 2008 version of the R32, I would like to come out and state BOLDLY, as I used to see the 2008 R32 (whilst driving a Tornado Red 2004 R32) for VW/Porsche/Audi when the car first arrived in Alaska (yes, I was one of TWO PEOPLE in the STATE to own an '04 and only 500 were EVER made IN RED) the 2004 is BY FAR THE SUPERIOR CAR!!! So much so, in fact that I ditched the Black/Blacked out 2005 344hp V-8 B6 Audi S4 in favour of purchasing ANOTHER ONE. This time I managed to obtain an near-mint Deep Pearl Blue 2004 R32 with leather (Again), of course. I'd like to see anyone else do THAT, and to do it for just $17,000 even (never been in an accident) and with just 60,000 on the odometer, not to mention it is a VW Certified used vehicle, under factory warrantee until 74,000 miles and still has roadside assistance. $17 Grand!!! The only things that the owner didn't get from the person that he purchased the car from, are the three rear headrests and the bulk-head/cargo-cover for the rear hatch. Both of these items I am hunting down through various channels, but I was NOT about to pass up the chance to get out of that bulky B6 Audi S4 with it's 12mpg city, and into the BLUE 2004 R32 of my DREAMS. My new R32 has seen 30mpg AROUND THE CITY and also can achieve over 400 miles per tank, but driving it HARD AND FAST as it is meant to be, "Poseidon" STILL gets 370!!! It's also just as fast, if not faster than my Audi and the ECU speed governor that governs all '04s AND '08s at 130 mph has been removed, which means it's capable of doing about 180 as ANY originally German, autobahn-DESIGNED car ought to!!! My new blue 2004 R32 came with an AEM cold air intake and filter (which I just exchanged) as well as a short-throw shifter too. I also have THREE BRAND NEW 18" 14-spoke OEM WHEELS to put on it (after this winter) that I accidentally left in Alaska when I moved here to Colorado. They are now with a friend. Try to finding THOSE BABIES on the INTERNET! HA!!! GOOD LUCK. And try finding A CAR like this one, only 30 miles away!!! Since purchasing it, I have had the engine completely stage-one remapped by Revo Techniks, installed a VW ipod-adapter (just like in my old one, AND the one in my Audi), performed the "flapper-mod" which makes the car literally snarl like a BEAST at lower RPMs and sound like a SWARM of ANGRY HORNETS at higher ones (similar to an F1 car's sound). Driving underneath tunnels and overpasses is nearly akin to sex, as is wrapping my hands around that fat, jet black, hand made, and stitched, erotically contoured steering wheel, sitting in that JET BLACK LEATHER INTERIOR in which the dashboard subtly faces TOWARDS THE DRIVER with it's eye-candy inidiglo and red gauges. Both of these are MUNDANE in the 2008 version. The dashboard is a COMPLETELY FLAT EXPANSE of ANTHRACITE GRAY (as is the whole interior on a 2008) highlighted with ridiculously gaudy prysmatically reflective, brushed aluminum trim. (how TOTALLY BARBIE!!!) dash in the 2008, or the platicky, thin, factory stamped-out steering wheel in the "newer" car. Gone are the after-market Koenig racing seats, in favour of ones WITH HEADRESTS (lmao!!!) which also, upon closer inspection ARE THE EXACT SAME SEATS IN THE GTI, except instead of GTI, they are STAMPED (not HAND STITCHED fore and aft as on the '04's Koenig's) R32 (and where else, BUT ON SOLELY ON THE HEADRESTS!!!) MUCH CHEAPER that way!!! Then there's the stereo system. While the 2004 had Volkswagen's ultra-premium Monsoon stereo system, which sounds INCREDIBLE even at MAX VOLUME (there's even an amplifier factory built into the trunk), VW ditched it in 2008, in favour of adding 2 more speakers instead (now there are ten), except the funny part about that, is that VW could have added FOUR MORE SPEAKERS and the stereo would STILL SOUND WORSE, not being Monsoon, nor POSESSING A BUILT-IN AMP!!! It sounds like CRAP compared to a 2004s (two more speakers or not!!!). This is not to mention that the 2004 is a raw, unadulterated MANUALLY GEAR-BOXED SPORTS CAR. Yes, the ride may be less "refined", but, you see, ride "refinement" and "sports-car" ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE!!! And let me make a few last complaints about the 2008. It is one UGLY car, as are ALL the "Rabbits" LOL! Sure, "just add a little chrome to that grille there, okay, it's an R32!!!" They look like SPACESHIPS more than they do automobiles. There's also the fact that (although VW advertised the 2004 as having only 240hp, the SLIGHTEST BIT of Internet research will tell you that, at the last minute they decided simply to use the Audi TTs engine "as is" thus giving it 250hp, THE EXACT SAME ENGINE given to a heavier car made FOUR YEARS LATER! The 2008 R32 is HEAVIER, SLOWER, and gets WORSE GAS MILEAGE than it's older, wiser, better-looking more-fun-loving "step-brother". An finally, WHY ON EARTH would VW choose to REDUCE the number of spokes in those beautiful "14-spoke" 18" wheels, keeping them the SAME SIZE, and reducing # of spokes to TEN!!! And there's also little things, like the connective strings on the 2004's hatch cover (which I still need to find, although that AND the headrests will ADD WEIGHT I suppose!), when you removed it, the strings had tiny balls on their tips and SELF-RETRACTED... RIGHT BACK INTO THE THE COVER, on the 2008, they DON'T SEL-RETRACT AT ALL! They just dangle in place. SEE? Even the little things VW managed to mangle on the abomination bestowed an "MKV R32". I SMIRK when I see people driving 2008 R32s around, because I know my car is not only ergonomically, and visually more appealing, but MUCH FASTER and MORE FUN TOSS ABOUT. Did any of you 2008 fans know that a 2004 can stop from 0-60mph in 108ft! Yup. That's faster than almost any car EVER MADE, including cars like the Ferrari Enzo, Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Alpha Romeos, Aston Marins, etc! The list of cars that can stop in less feet than that could be counted on LESS THAN ONE HAND. What's YOUR braking distance all you 2008 owners? EXACTLY, that's what I thought. ;) You gys NEVER want to RACE (I wonder why???) There's even 3 "brand-new 2008s" just waiting to be driven home on the lot of the largest VW retailer in Colorado, here in Denver. THREE LEFT. THE CAR CAME OUT TWO YEARS AGO!!! In 2004, and rightfully so, dealers could barely keep them in inventory. People have seen through the guise to the truth. And maybe that is why I get a compliment on the car almost every day! Yesterday I received TWO, from two completely different people in five minutes. One man, had never even heard of or seen one before as I got gas. He approached, complimented me on my car, and when I explained all the features it has, and that only 5,000 were EVER made and only in 2004, his jaw went slack, especially when he saw the black on black pristine leather interior with the hand-stitched R logos on those sweet Koenig racing seats. "And it's a naturally aspirated V-6, with NO TURBO? WOW!!!" How many horses you running he asked? "About 300". I replied. As we were talking someone in a silver Porsche Cayman S pulled up, and the guy had NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT HIS CAR, except, as he back VERY near my car, "Look out, it looks like we have an asshole here in this Porsche," and smiled whilst continuing to ask me about my car. The guy in the Porsche (who appeared to be approximately my age, 31) seemed visibly annoyed by the fact that the man (who was driving a Bimmer, mind you) was fawning OVER MY CAR, and paid his $100,000 Porsche ABSOLUTELY NO ATTENTION (and neither did I). It was flattering AND comical!!! I bet he left and was like, "WHAT?!! A blue 2004 R32 draws admiring fans, but not the beautiful Porsche that I pay $800 a month just to own!!!" I PAY... nothing, save the $17,000 I plunked down to buy a VW certified and under warrantee car that at a dealership would EASILY command $26,000. There isn't even a SINGLE DOOR DING on her!!! I've even been approached by someone driving (and yes THIS IS COMPLETELY TRUE) a 2007 Audi RS4 and been told at a light, "Hey, NICE CAR!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT COLOUR!!!" Needless to say, this coming from an RS4 owner caught me completely off guard, as I WAS ADMIRING HIS CAR!!! I was practically speechless, but managed to reply "Yeah, that RS4 IS SWEET!!!" We both smiled and the light changed. So for all of you on here, who are of the opinion that your 2008 R32 is SIMPLY BEYOND REPROACH, 1st OF ALL, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! SECOND OF ALL... DRIVE A 2004!!! And LASTLY, I MORE THAN AGREE WITH THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR OF THIS ARTICLE!!! THANK YOU, SIR!!! How could I NOT agree I've owned TWO and gotten rid of a SLICK 2005 V-8 Audi S4, just to get ANOTHER!!! =D

I too have a soft spot for the Golf. I've had 3 so far.
My first was a MkIV Generation Golf. Although a 1.6, I instantly fell for it.
Then I had the MkV basic model which had a few admirable attributes.
Now, I'm the proud owner of an '07 R32.
I was actually looking for a GTI. But when I set my eyes on the R32 I felt that that's what I want to drive for the next x years.
All that aside, driving the MkIV was like a charm. You bond with it, you can easily get the badboy in you riled up driving this thing. You are perfectly fine with what it's equipped with or the lack of it.
After I got the MkV, I couldn't find anything that's special about it but overall it's an all round good car to own but lacking in terms of power.
It turns out that all it needed was some "R". When you get your R webmaster, you'll feel how much work was put into it and you'll notice that all the gadgets and superior technology are found on bigger luxury cars.
OK, you're paying a whole lot of money for it. Advice? Get a used one!
Getting my used R made me feel like I pirated a box office movie. I feel like that everytime I'm getting behind the wheel. Then, something else takes over. I always wanna press on the gas pedal hard enough to hear the growl of the V6 and then maybe it'll transform, just like an autobot, and start sprinting down the highway leaving a wake of destruction behind it. Listen guys, I'm not insane. It's just that I found my "R".
When the '04 R32 first came out everyone thought it needed more character just like the '08 R32; all it needs is a little time.
I guess driving the '04 R32 makes you feel like a badass cuz I'm feeling like a badass with money.:D

I too have a soft spot for the Golf. I’ve had 3 so far.
My first was a MkIV Generation Golf. Although a 1.6, I instantly fell for it.
Then I had the MkV basic model which had a few admirable attributes.
Now, I’m the proud owner of an ’07 R32.
I was actually looking for a GTI. But when I set my eyes on the R32 I felt that that’s what I want to drive for the next x years.
All that aside, driving the MkIV was like a charm. You bond with it, you can easily get the badboy in you riled up driving this thing. You are perfectly fine with what it’s equipped with or the lack of it.
After I got the MkV, I couldn’t find anything that’s special about it but overall it’s an all round good car to own but lacking in terms of power.
It turns out that all it needed was some “R”. When you get your R webmaster, you’ll feel how much work was put into it and you’ll notice that all the gadgets and superior technology are found on bigger luxury cars.
OK, you’re paying a whole lot of money for it. Advice? Get a used one!

I would like to thank everyone for their contributions. I found some of the views interesting, although I have to say I do not necessarily agree with all of them. I bought my R32 Mk V in June last year (2008) and I have to say it is my first VW. I am most impressed with the car and cannot fault it in any way. I have the DSG gearbox, sunroof and RNS 510 options with the ipod adaptor, which is a complete waste of money. I have moved all my ipod music to the hard disk drive of the RNS 510. I live just outside Melbourne, Victoria Australia (50K), in the Mount Dandenong Ranges, which has some awesome winding roads where one can really put the car through it's paces. From a purely non-technical, but subjective point of view I have to say the R32 has outstanding characteristics for type of driving I do around the mountain. I drove from my home to Brisbane, Queensland, which is a distance of approximately 1700 kilometers, and I had a few, but very brief stops along the way. The trip took approximately 21 hours to complete and included a significant period of night driving. What impressed me the most was the total lack of driver fatigue for such a long trip and I put this down to the well balanced and engineered machinery. I also think it comes down to the rush one gets from driving a car that has the sort of capability that the VW R32 has. My first sports car was an Mazda RX-7, but the VW R32 is in a different class
altogether. To all you R32 drivers out there I hope you continues to enjoy your driving pleasure as much as I do and I hope you all keep safe.

Excellent coverage of the MV R32. As an older(pushing 70)fan I think I have enough younger genes left to truly enjoy such a car for a few years before my reflexes can no longer keep up. (This really makes me sad....)

Much was made about the price/value of the '08 R32 when it first came on the market in the mid-$30K range. There are many on the used market now and prices are falling towards $23K, with CarMax buying them at around $22K. At such prices, this car is emerging as a real buy and certainly worth a "new" second look by its distractors. Thanks for all this great information and feedback.
